SUMMARY:ASCE PDH Day (3 PDHs)
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Syracuse Section for a half-day in-person continuing education event\, on Thursday\, June 27 at Jake Hafner’s Restaurant & Tavern in North Syracuse. The educational program will take place from 1:00PM to 4:30PM\, and a cash bar social hour will follow. Light food will be provided. \n  \nMembers: $35 \nNon-Members: $40 \n  \nCity of Sherrill Wastewater Treatment Plant & Collection System (1 PDH) \nErin Ryan\, P.E. and Jesse Semanchik\, P.E.\, Barton & Loguidice \nThe City of Sherrill Wastewater Treatment Plant and Collection System Improvements Project upgraded aging equipment at the WWTP to meet new SPDES permit limits within the project’s $8.2 million budget. WWTP regionalization with the adjacent City and multiple treatment process technologies were  assessed to select the best solution for the City taking into account capital and O&M costs\, operational efficiencies\, and effluent water quality.  The project received a Platinum Award from ACEC in 2024. \nGround Improvement for Building Support (1 PDH) \nNathan McLean\, P.E.\, Menard \n  \nIn recent years there has been a proliferation of the use of a wide variety of ground improvement techniques.  In many situations\, ground improvement techniques offer cost and scheduling advantages over the conventional approaches. For this presentation\, Menard will focus on the use of Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) TM and stone columns (SCs). Case studies will be provided that show the applications of ground improvement as they relate to building support.  Case studies will include design considerations\, construction techniques\, challenging field conditions\, and results. \n  \nAn Old Landfill Reclamation (1 PDH) \nBrad Smith\, P.E.\, GHD \n  \nA case history of a decade long process to address leachate generation while creating additional landfill airspace.  The project is one of the largest voluntary landfill reclamation projects in New York State.

SUMMARY:Multiply your time through Effective Delegation
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Doug Howard\, P.E. \n  \nBased in Auburn\, NY\, Doug helps engineering managers to transform into confident leaders who influence\, motivate\, and inspire teams to maximize organizational impact – through corporate consulting\, webinars\, workshops\, groups training\, and 1:1 coaching. \n  \nAs a leader your value lies in leading\, guiding\, supporting\, and growing your team – versus executing every task yourself. \n  \nBut the struggle to keep up with your overwhelming amount of responsibilities is real – and time-management isn’t the answer\, because it doesn’t CREATE MORE TIME. \n  \nInstead of harnessing the power of delegation\, many engineering managers fall into the trap of “doing” and micromanaging – which holds you and your team back from reaching your full potential. \n  \nBy the end of this 60 minute webinar\, you’ll learn how to: \n\nShift Your Mindset: Cultivate the delegation mindset that unleashes your potential\, enabling you to trust others with tasks and focus on high-leverage activities.\nDetermine What to Delegate – Develop a keen sense for identifying tasks that can be delegated\, freeing up your time while boosting your team’s skills and engagement.\nMaster the Delegation Framework – Leverage a powerful step-by-step process for effectively delegating tasks while ensuring clarity\, accountability\, risk mitigation\, and successful outcomes.\nDelegate to All Levels – Amplify your influence by fostering collaboration and applying the delegation framework to your direct reports\, cross-functional teams\, and even superiors!

SUMMARY:PDH Live Webinar: COVID in Wastewater
DESCRIPTION:PDH Live Webinar: COVID in Wastewater \nDate: June 3\, 2021 \nTime: 12:00PM – 1:00PM \nPDH Credit: 1.0 \nMember Price: Free \nNon-member Price: $15 \nA webinar link will be emailed\, the morning of the webinar\, to those who sign up. Directions on how to obtain your PDH certificate will be emailed directly after the presentation’s conclusion. Registration will close on Monday\, May 31\, 2021 at 8PM. \nPDH Webinar Summary \nCOVID-19 virus transmission occurs from symptomatic and asymptomatic people.  This transmission occurs “silently” in about 50% of cases\, allowing the virus to spread rapidly.   Monitoring the wastewater collection system can help a community understand where the virus is present at a low per-capita cost\, and with the local Health Department’s involvement can reduce the number of case with non-pharmacological interventions.  This technique can also be applied to facilities. \n\nWastewater monitoring for SARS-CoV-2 along with human health data can be used to assess the spread of the virus within a community and inform health decision makers of localized outbreaks of COVID-19.  This knowledge on increasing community transmission is gained up to 7 days (or more) in advance of what can be seen with human testing.   Early detection of transmission allows officials to take precautionary safety measures that can prevent future spread while maintaining a layer of anonymity for residents. When transmission decreases\, monitoring wastewater confirms the decline in the presence of COVID-19 cases.  Even with progress toward vaccinating our entire population\, there are and will be people who cannot or do not get vaccinated.  These individuals can continue to spread the virus until herd immunity is reached\, particularly with more contagious variants in New York State. \n\nThe presentation will cover the basics of wastewater epidemiology\, as well as results from several studies and active projects.  This will include an overview of the NYS Pilot results in one municipality\, and show the power of this tool in a community setting when an outbreak occurs. \n\nPlease contact Bill Finch (wfinch@bartonandloguidice.com) with any questions.
